Jeeves, we hardly knew ye...

Say farewell to Jeeves, the accommodating butler who introduced the "Ask Jeeves" service several years ago. Now, it's just plain vanilla (oops, they preferred to be thought of as "sleek") Ask.com.

No one asked me, but I wish they had kept the butler. Google owns the stripped down search engine user interface. Yahoo! owns the bazaar approach. Jeeves offered a human face to searching.

From what I read in an AP article, Ask.com's CEO has a dismissive attitude about Jeeves and pretty much said people need to get over losing the icon. Their goal is to topple AOL, MSN, and Yahoo to become a heavy competitor against Google for search engine supremacy. I'm not so sure that their strategy is going to work out in the end, but to each his own. I'm going to miss the icon.
