This definitely is a trend. Noted on Woody's Futures Lab blog, and from the Smart Mobs blog (which is a blog like this one--a more famous origin to be sure, it is about the trends and issues discussed in Howard Rheingold's book Smart Mobs) . The original source is an English-language compendium of news from Norway.
Seven Year Olds carrying Mobile Phones
"In 2002 only eight percent of 7-9 year-olds had cell phones, a year later this number had doubled to one in six having mobiles. In the age group 10-11 years 58 percent use mobiles, up 12 percent points in a year.
Nearly all older children have cell phones: 89 percent of 12-13 year-olds, 96 percent of 14-15 year-olds and 100 percent of 16-21 year-olds own and use mobiles. The survey measured habits at 1,500 households across the country."
This has nothing to do with phones or trends but is worth a chuckle...dog robs a gas station of its favourite chocolate candy, complete with photos from the security camera.

Thanks, Lorena, for the correct dog link. I must have pasted the wrong thing. One of my own dogs, a border collie, removed and ate a chocolate Santa from the Christmas tree the first year we had her. How did we know? Because she had carefully unwrapped it first. The almost intact wrapper was on the carpet. All edible ornaments hang high now.
If you're fond of mobile surveys like The downside of being mobile:
-- 36 percent have been shocked by the size of their monthly cell phone bill
-- 28 percent have driven less safely when talking on their cell phone
-- 24 percent feel they need to answer their phone even if it interrupts a meeting or meal
-- 23 percent say too many people call them on their cell phone
-- 22 percent have been untruthful about their whereabouts when on a cell phone
